How to Prepare for GCE A/L Physics: A Practical Study Plan

GCE A/L Physics has a reputation for being one of the hardest subjects in the Physical Science stream — not because any single topic is impossible, but because the syllabus is wide, cumulative, and heavily calculation-based. A plan that just “covers everything once” rarely holds up under exam pressure. This guide is about prioritizing what actually earns marks, and practicing the way the exam is actually structured.

Start from the syllabus structure, not a textbook chapter order

The official NIE syllabus organizes A/L Physics into 11 units, and they are not weighted equally. Mechanics (110 periods) and Oscillations and Waves (100 periods) together account for close to a third of total teaching time — they are also the units most other topics build on. Current Electricity (70) and Thermal Physics, Electrostatic Field, and Magnetic Field (60 each) form the next tier. Smaller units like Matter and Radiation and Gravitational Field carry fewer marks individually but are common sources of “easy” questions students skip revising because they feel minor.

Practical implication: don’t split your study time evenly across all 11 units. Put your first, deepest pass into Mechanics and Waves specifically — weakness there compounds into every later topic, including Electronics and parts of Current Electricity that reuse the same mathematical tools (vectors, differentiation of motion, wave equations).

Use past papers as a diagnostic tool, not just practice

The most common mistake is treating past papers as something to do after studying is finished. Used that way, they only tell you what you already knew. Instead:

  1. Attempt a past paper before finishing a topic, timed, without notes. Wherever you struggle tells you exactly what to revise next — this is far more efficient than re-reading a whole unit hoping the weak spot surfaces.
  2. Redo the same paper’s structural pattern with a different year. A/L Physics papers repeat question shapes far more than they repeat question content — once you recognize the pattern in a Mechanics numerical or a circuits problem, the specific numbers stop mattering as much.
  3. Time yourself against the real paper structure, not just the total duration. If Part B consistently takes you longer than its allotted share of marks, that’s a concrete signal — not a vague feeling of “I need to be faster.”
